Coaching Practice

Sport is damaging to your health Critcher, Charles (2000). Recreation (BBR), Vol 59, No 9, pp 17 - 20.

Policies and programmes for competitive sport are often based on claims for its moral benefits. The author asks whether sport is indeed one of the best vehicles for tackling social exclusion and promoting national pride.

It is also argued that sport can actually damage health by increasing the chance of physical injury, short- or long-term, whereas attention to diet and lifestyle habits does actively promote good health.

If sport is not primarily about morality or health, then what is it about? It could simply be a form of play, and play is its own justification.
